Where to Write?
Over the year or so I’ve been writing these newsletters, we’ve discussed what to write, and why we write, and of course how to write, but haven’t spent much time thinking about the where.
I’ve been pondering the question of where I write a fair bit recently. As you may know, I was lucky enough to be invited to run a week-long writing retreat in Chez Castillon, so a few weeks ago I packed my bags and relocated to Castillon-la-Bataille for six days. Though I anticipated spending a fair bit of my time with the other writers on the retreat, discussing their projects and doing my best to help them navigate any difficulties they might be having, I still took a few projects with me.
One in particular, THE EXPERIMENT, I was really hoping to crack. I’ve talked about this elsewhere, but I was struggling to get going on this serialised novel as I often am when I’m about to start a new project. For me it’s a little like getting into a freezing cold swimming pool. I know it’s going to be fine once I’m in there and warmed up — I’ll probably enjoy it in fact — but when I’m standing on the edge about to dip my toes in, my brain will find almost any excuse not to take that vital first step forward.
