I forget where I heard that line, but it comes back to me sometimes when a project feels sticky or I'm in two minds about what to write next. I think probably you hit the nail on the head when you said you weren't invested enough in The Experiment as a story. Novels need to OWN us - they have to pull at us with the irresistible force of something that NEEDS to come into existence.
