Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts on this, S.J. I've been working for some years now on a horror novel and I've done some of the things you mentioned (been aware of what's going on in the genre, paid attention to parts of the story that flagged and didn't propel it forward), but it's nice to be reminded anyway!
I published a couple of crime novels - big city former undercover cop hiding out from angry gangs in a small quiet town. With murder, drugs, and ev spirits and some new First Nations allies. Not sure what that genre is but I liked it. Then I did some fantasy, some sci-fi, more crime. My subgenre seems to be anything a little dark, with some twists.
You're welcome ;-) That woud be a nice drink in a bar for someone to order - either deliberately, or as a naive tourist not knowing the consequences.
I did a Flash Fiction Friday thing for a while with some friends - a weekly story, <1000 words, witten to a wide variety of prompts. The point was to challenge the imagination and explore various genres. I may restart it. https://www.flashfictionfriday.ca/

I'm going to have to park-up for the moment, rather than risk starting to take a closer look-see just now. My name's not Alice but like the abled Ms Liddell I have a curiosity that's wont to land me - all too simultaneously - in more Wonderlands than a writer of my ilk can cope with. I will be back mind, for sure, to pick up on this necessary taking of a temporary rain-check.
And it is, just clicked and checked, set wet to rain all through the afternoon where I am, in Middle England.

'A Little Darkness' or 'A Little Darkness' or 'A Little Twist in the Dark' or 'The Dark Twisters' or . . .
What a fertile seed ground for sowing novel titles your comment seems, all of a sudden and unexpected, to be proving for this reader . . .
Thanks Mike, for twisting a blue touchpaper and prompting me to strike a simple spark to ignite it.
