Before I Go to Sleep was first published, in the UK anyway, in April 2011. In some ways it feels like yesterday, and in others it feels, I dunno, a decade ago. Either way it’s grown up now, it’s wearing long trousers and no longer feels like much to do with me. This is a good thing. I’m sometimes asked whether my characters live on in my head after a book is done, and the truth is they kind of do. Christine (the protagonist of Before I Go to Sleep) feels like an old friend who I’ve lost touch with. I’m sure she’s out there, living her life, but she no longer even sends me a Christmas card. (Let’s face it, she’s probably forgotten me completely).
