Hi everyone!
This week’s #SJsTwitterBookClub featured author Polis Loizou (@PolisLoizou), and we chatted about his brilliant novel The Way It Breaks.
I asked Polis to summarise the book for us. “The book is set in Cyprus in the 2000s, and follows a young man (Orestis) who's trying to better his life. One day, he meets a gigolo and his life takes a different turn...”
We talked about the unusual structure of the book, with its multiple narrators. Polis said, “I was inspired by Nabokov's "Pale Fire", in that its structure reveals more of the narrative gradually. So I approached this book as if it was a matryoshka doll, or stripper - every movement of a Part reveals a bit more. Like Cyprus, there's more going on beneath the surface.”
I asked Polis about the beautiful jacket and he told us he’d been given free reign and commissioned his mother to paint it.

Next week, #SJsTwitterBookClub welcomes author Miranda Dickinson, who’ll tell us all about her phenomenal bestseller, The Day We Meet Again. Not to be missed!
Happy reading!
