The Saturday Compendium 6: A missive from the sickbed, this is what's been keeping me going.
I trawl through the highs and lows of culture and ideas, so you don't have to.
The Saturday Compendium is where I round up a few of the things that have interested me in one way or another this week. Some cool, some not so cool, some that have made me think, some that have inspired me to action, some that have shaken me out of a rut. Some old, some new, all borrowed, some possibly blue. But whatever else, they’re all things I think you might find interesting too
Do you want more? Do join up as a reader-supporter. You’ll get all my posts, past and future, including essays, humour, fiction, behind-the-scenes publishing gossip, and much more. All for about the same price as a monthly cold brew coffee.
NB. A slight change in format going forwards. From now on, I’ll be making the standard SC post entirely free, but putting the extra content in a separate ‘Deeper Dive’ post for paying subscribers only.

What I’ve been watching: Douglas Is Cancelled
SO MANY people recommended this, and they were right. It’s fantastically written and full of surprises.
Worth four hours of anyone’s time.
What I’ve also been watching: Nineteen Eighty Four
This week I’ve been ill, so there’s been a lot of watching.
Amazing performances, brilliant in so many ways, but sadly, it’s getting more disturbing over time, not less.
What I’m reading: Julia - Sandra Newman
Still on this. I’m enjoying it hugely but have been too unwell to read very much,
Have you read it? What did you think?
I’m afraid that’s it for this week. By way of apology, I’m extending my flash sale. Sign up now and get a whole year of full access to Compendia (which would normally include a deeper dive into at least one of my recommendations) for less than a fiver.
How about you? What are you enjoying at the moment?
