This week’s #SJsTwitterBookClub featured author Louisa Reid (@louisareid), who came along to talk about her fantastic novel “The Poet”.
I asked Louisa to give us a spoiler-free, tweet-length introduction to her book. “So,’ she said, ‘THE POET is the story of a young woman who stops writing. And when she stops writing she starts to doubt herself, and all she is capable of. However, once she realises that her lover Tom is not all he seems, she has to wise up or let him take everything.”
Later, she told us, “I wanted to write a book about potential, and how we live in a society that allows women to doubt their ability and question their right to success. Also the academic setting interested me - our society obsesses over formal education. Especially Oxbridge.”
Written in verse, it’s a brilliant book, and we had a fun discussion about it.
We also chatted about poetry generally, and in particular Charlotte Mew, who features heavily in the book. J M McQueen (@TLOI_official) asked Louisa what attracted her to Mew, and why she wanted to include her in THE POET.
I also asked Louisa what one piece of advice she’d give to aspiring writers…
