Hopes and Doubts — The Diary of a Debut
My first book, Before I Go to Sleep, first came out in April 2011. I’d completely forgotten that in the January of that year I started keeping a journal to chronicle things as they happened.
My entries were sporadic, and some intensely personal. I’ve tried to edit it as little as possible, however.

4th April 2011 - 12 weeks to publication
Busy day. Work in the morning and then I went for media training with [my publicists]. Enjoyed it, A asked me lots of questions, most of which I’d already been asked, or thought about at least, and took notes as I responded. She’s going to send me notes.
They told me they were near to securing an interview with the Sunday Times Culture magazine, which would be amazing, and there are various other irons in the fire, including a joint event with Sophie Hannah and also one with Tess Gerritsen.
There’s a sentence I never thought I’d type.
5th April 2011
Spent the afternoon at [my NHS workplace] today - I have to do 20 days for them to keep my career break open and they’ve asked me to work on a brochure that we can use to try and get the referrals up.
