Hi everyone,
On Wednesday Clare Mackintosh (@claremackint0sh) joined us for #SJsTwitterBookClub to talk about I Let You Go, her astonishingly good 2014 debut which went on to be a Richard and Judy pick, and also a huge bestseller.
We kicked off by talking about why Clare chose I Let You Go to talk about, and whether it was her favourite of her books.
And — in response to my question about whether the book had a ‘soundtrack’ we could listen to as we chatted, and whether she wrote it listening to music — she told us about the circumstances of its creation.
Of course our chat quickly turned to that twist (don’t worry about clicking on the links if you've not read the book, the chat was spoiler-free)…
… and twists in general..
… which prompted a question about the difference between a twist and a reveal…
… which between us we tried to sort out…
… before the two of us started arguing about whose was the ‘better’ twist.
The conversation moved on… we talked process and whether Clare plans out her books, or flies by the seat of her pants. Yes, the age-old ‘pantser or plotter’ question…
And at one point took a surreal turn when as a group we debated whether Will Dean’s hair has (or should have) its own Twitter account.
And finally my traditional final question almost took a worrying turn when Clare confessed she’d considered doing some research.
But luckily no animals were, or will be, harmed in this entirely theoretical thought-experiment.
It was a fun night, and wonderful to be chatting about such a game-changing book! It, and all the books we are chatting (or indeed, have chatted) about on #SJsTwitterBookClub, are available on my virtual bookshelf at Bookshop.org.1
Next week (Thursday, April 22nd) we will be welcoming @josephknox__ to talk about the first of his Aiden Waits books - Sirens. Dont’ miss it!
Happy reading!
