Hi everyone!
This week’s #SJsTwitterBookClub featured Joanne Harris (@joannechocolat), chatting about her incredible new book Honeycomb.
Joanne introduced the book to us. “It's a collection of 100 stories that make up a kind of novel, illustrated by Charles Vess. Set in the same expanded multiverse as my novellas, it follows the (mis)adventures of the Lacewing King and his journey through the Nine Worlds.” She told us that the book began on Twitter itself, when she started writing the stories as a series of tweets, live, as they occurred to her.
“In some cases I was winging it: in others I more or less knew where the story would take me.
I asked if she’d planned them out first, or made them up as she went along, tweet by tweet. “In some cases I was winging it: in others I more or less knew where the story would take me. The stories were often very short, sparked off by current events, or things I'd seen on Twitter. But there were enough returning characters to give it a long story arc, too.”
Later we talked about genre, and Joanne told us “I'm not sure I really understand the idea of genres. To me, the stories matter more than the section of the bookshop they're sold in.” And when @mogwynfeather said, “Hello! In the local library, Honeycomb has a 'Science Fiction' sticker. What sticker would you give (it)…?” Joanne replied,
As always, the discussion, was lots of fun. If you missed it and want to catch up, just click on the tweet above to be taken to the thread.
Next week (THURSDAY, 7.30pm UK time), we’ll be talking about A THEATRE FOR DREAMERS, with author Polly Samson (@PollySamson). Not to be missed!
Happy reading!
